The University of Hertfordshire has revealed the most sought-after courses during its most recent clearing survey, and said 60 per cent of its Clearing students began their research early.

  • 47 per cent used Clearing because they changed their mind about the course or the location – not because of their grades
  • University reassures students about the most emotional day of their study year
  • 70 per cent secured a place within 24 hours of A-level results

The university also revealed that not getting the grades they expected only ranked fourth in the list of reasons why students used Clearing, common to many people’s popular misconception.

Students told Herts, in its Clearing survey, that 24 per cent used Clearing after changing their minds about where they wanted to study. A further 23 per cent changed their mind about what they wanted to study. Another 18 per cent simply left applying late in the day. Only 15 per cent cited not getting the grades they needed for a preferred offer elsewhere.

Herts revealed the data as UCAS officially opens Clearing, which can be used by students to research courses and universities. 56% of Herts students used UCAS to find their courses here.

Professor Mairi Watson, Deputy Vice Chancellor, said:

“Our survey of students here who used Clearing to secure their place sends two very clear messages to any young person wanting to go to university this year. Firstly, it’s not all about your grades, it’s about you, and what is right for you. Even if you have your offer, look around, be sure it is what you want and where you want to be.

“Secondly, start early. 70 per cent of those who responded to our survey had a place secured with us within 24 hours of A-level results. 40 per cent began their research before August. It really pays to have done even a little research. Places for some of the most popular courses are limited but your life opportunities are not.”

The survey, of 186 students, showed that 70 per cent went online to secure their place while 30 per cent used the telephone.  95 per cent of students told the university they were pleased with how it dealt with the Clearing process.

Professor Mairi Watson added:

“My advice as you get towards this all-important summer, on what is often the most exciting and emotional day of a student’s year - is not to panic, stay calm, look around, and do not worry if things do not go to plan. That is what Clearing is there for – change your mind, do not feel trapped, and follow your heart to find what is right for you.

“Our focus is on creating employable, ready for work young people and making a university education a valuable asset to have. That’s why our feedback is so positive and encouraging. Clearing can help a young student find exactly what they need, whatever their circumstances.”
