Herts Principal Lecturer nominated for prestigious Eddie Award
Howard Berry, a Principal Lecturer and Head of Post-Production for Film and Television at the University of Hertfordshire, has been nominated for an esteemed Eddie Award for Best Edited Documentary by the American Cinema Editors (ACE).
Howard's latest work, Her Name Was Moviola, stands out as the only UK-produced documentary nominated in this highly competitive category. Remarkably, the film has achieved this recognition without a distributor, competing alongside projects by luminaries including Ron Howard, productions by Martin Scorsese and global platforms Disney+ and Netflix.
Howard said: "This nomination is an extraordinary milestone and recognition of the dedication, creativity, and passion that have gone into this project. Being recognised on such a global stage is both humbling and exhilarating, and it truly underscores the impact of the work we’ve achieved together."
The documentary, a heartfelt tribute to the iconic Moviola film editing machine, highlights the profound influence of this revolutionary tool on cinematic storytelling. Featuring a script written by and starring nine-time Academy Award nominee Walter Murch, as well as appearances by Cannes Palme d’Or-winning director Mike Leigh, the film boasts backing from the Kubrick Estate and Warner Bros.
Her Name Was Moviola has garnered critical acclaim for its exploration of the tactile artistry of editing and its impact on the evolution of film. It delves into the significance of the Moviola, celebrated as a cornerstone of filmmaking history, while showcasing the creative processes of legendary editors and directors.
This nomination highlights Howard’s exceptional contribution to the field and demonstrates the University’s commitment to fostering talent and celebrating cinematic excellence.
