Herts ranks in the top five overall for the second year running in latest postgraduate survey
The University of Hertfordshire has ranked fifth overall and achieved sector-leading results across all areas of learning, teaching and development in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2024.
The 2024 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES), which is compiled by higher education and research charity Advance HE and will be published in November, includes questions on the full study cycle of taught postgraduate students, including overall satisfaction, skills development, assessment, support, engagement, organisation, teaching, resources, and community. It ranked the University in the top ten in every section of the survey, including first for Support.
One of 108 institutions* to take part this year, with an overall sector response rate of 24.7%, Herts had 6,956 students (37.1%) complete the survey, putting us 12.4 percentage points above the sector for responses. The institute’s overall student satisfaction score was then 92% this year, again, above the sector average for 2024 at 84%.
Other ranking highlights from the survey include:
- Overall satisfaction: 5th out of 107 institutions
- Teaching: 7th out of 107
- Engagement: 6th out of 107
- Community: 2nd out of 107
- Assessment: 4th out of 107
- Organisation: 6th out of 107
- Resources: 3rd out of 94
- Support: 1st out of 96
- Skills development: 2nd out of 94
Herts also performed in the top quartile overall for most academic disciplines. This included courses that fall within the subject categories of Law and medicine and dentistry, with both ranking third with 92%.
Dr Charmagne Barnes, Pro Vice Chancellor of Education and Student Experience, said:
“These are fantastic results which are testament to the work we have done over the last year to support our postgraduate students.
“Thank you to all colleagues who have been involved in the teaching, learning, and support of our postgraduate taught students this year. It’s rewarding to see that our students have recognised and appreciated all of the work that has been carried out to help them achieve their goals.”
The PTES results follow an excellent showing for Herts in the National Student Survey, for which it ranked first in the East of England for overall student positivity for the second year running.
*Please note: Not all participating institutions had sufficient responses for results to be reported in every section.
