Studying abroad offers students a unique opportunity to broaden their perspectives and gain insight into different cultures. At Herts, we offer a wide range of studying abroad programmes for those who would like to immerse themselves in new experiences.

Josephine and Bre are both Herts alumni who decided to take a year to study abroad whilst at Herts. Both their journeys were filled with self-discovery and personal growth.

Josephine Tsiagbe: Embracing Spanish culture and learning more about the global aviation industry

Josephine wanted to broaden her horizons whilst studying a BSc (Hons) Aerospace Technology with Pilot Studies degree at Herts. This led her to spend a year at Universidad Europea de Madrid in Spain. Despite feeling both nervous and excited before travelling to Spain, her time in Madrid became one of the most rewarding decisions she has made.

Some of her favourite things from her time in Spain included immersing herself in the Spanish culture, exploring Madrid and meeting new people. Another memorable highlight was getting to watch two football matches at the homes of Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, 'I saw Thierry Henry at the Atlético match!' Josephine recalls. The exciting student welcome day, complete with dance and other exhibitors, was another highlight for Josephine.

Her academic experiences were just as enriching. There were many exciting trips organised by her teachers to help students get a deeper insight into the aviation industry. Having the opportunity to tour the underground side of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid – Barajas Airport and visiting an air traffic control centre inspired her further.

Adjusting to life abroad came with a few obstacles Josephine had to tackle. Language barriers and homesickness were initial challenges. However, Josephine's perseverance paid off, 'after about three months in, it all started to click, I began absorbing the language and getting used to the culture there too' she says. Regular contact with family and creating routines helped her feel more at home. Josephine emphasises the importance of taking each day as it comes to avoid getting overwhelmed, 'Patience is key'.

Bre: from London to long beach - a journey fuelled by music

Bre decided to study abroad during her BA (Hons) Music Industry Management degree as it was an opportunity for her to expand her global network and explore the music industry in a new market. 'Living and studying abroad allows you to form deep connections with amazing people'. During her time in Long Beach, California, Bre got to experience working with creatives, attend writing sessions and be able to sing, which she describes as 'life changing'.

One of the biggest obstacles Bre had to face was rediscovering her identity outside of her usual context. 'It was a real journey learning who I was when I was alone. I didn’t have the usual anchors such as my friends or family that had shaped me thus far'. The support from other international students and regular-check ins with loved ones back home were crucial for Bre during this period and helped her keep a sense of who she is.

There were also some unexpected cultural differences such as food, the educational system and commuting, which provided additional learning experiences for Bre.

'I am so grateful for my year abroad; it helped me trust myself and my ability to get through any obstacle that comes my way, which in turn has made me a confident risk taker. It showed me the importance of community and how far the support of friends and family can take you. Studying abroad directly impacted my career, as I was able to move into international marketing following my time abroad'.
