Herts to officially partner with London Mavericks netball club
The University of Hertfordshire is to become an official partner of London Mavericks for the next two years, in a move that will support the top Netball Super League (NSL) team with their athlete’s development, alongside a host of benefits for Herts students.
Formalising an existing relationship between the organisations – with a number of Herts performance netball students already playing for the London Mavericks NXT Gen Squad - the collaboration will see Herts students gain exclusive access to a range of work and educational opportunities at the leading netball club, while also providing the opportunity for Maverick players to study at the University.
Opportunities will include an exclusive apprenticeship position with the club; nine internships shadowing a wide range of professional disciplines; free match tickets and the chance for students to support London Mavericks matchdays, community projects and events.
London Mavericks will also provide the University with world-renowned and industry-leading guest speakers, and display its logo on the club’s pathway and NXT Gen kit, as well as on courtside boards at all their home venues. In return, the University will offer a number of bespoke, educational opportunities for the team’s players.
Professor Quintin McKellar, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire, said:
“The London Mavericks is one of the best netball teams in the UK, while netball is a flagship sport here at Herts, with our university team achieving significant national success. To make our already strong relationship an official partnership is a progressive move that will bring benefits to both our students and the Mavericks team players through educational opportunities.
“We have a strong record of providing the right dual career environment with opportunities for athletes to enable them to perform at their best in both their chosen sport as well as academically, and we look forward to seeing more athletes succeed as a result of this new partnership.”
Kieran Crombie, CEO of the London Mavericks, said:
“Partnering with the University of Hertfordshire is a fantastic step forward for the London Mavericks. We share a deep commitment to nurturing talent in netball and empowering women and girls to excel both on the court and in their education. We believe that the University of Hertfordshire has the leading netball programme in the country, and together we can create opportunities for the next generation of netballers to thrive.”
Tamsin Greenway, Director of Netball at the London Mavericks, said:
“The partnership between the University of Hertfordshire and the London Mavericks is incredibly important. The University is home to one of the strongest and most successful netball programmes in the UK. We are thrilled that Mel Mansfield, the University’s Head Coach, has joined us as the Head Coach for our new NXT Gen squad. This collaboration will create seamless connections between our squads and play a key role in retaining and attracting top talent. With its world-class sports facilities, exceptional staff, and leading educational programmes, the University of Hertfordshire offers unparalleled opportunities, and we’re excited to work together to empower students across sport.”
