The University of Hertfordshire is celebrating after being awarded 5 Stars overall in the latest QS Stars, a globally recognised university rating system assessing higher education institutions.

Through independent and in-depth evaluations based on a wide range of performance indicators across several categories, the University demonstrated strong performance with a total score of 779/1000. Most notably, the university earned five Stars in the following seven key areas:

  • Teaching: 110/150
  • Facilities: 99/100
  • Employability: 137/150
  • Governance: 81/100
  • Environmental Impact: 77/100
  • Global Engagement: 125/150
  • Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI): 45/50

With ratings from 0 to 5+ Stars overall and 0 to 5 Stars in individual categories, QS Stars allows universities to showcase their strengths across multiple categories, providing a unique way for institutions to demonstrate their achievements, regardless of how they fare in traditional rankings.

The most comprehensive mark of higher education excellence, QS Stars also helps prospective students identify their best-fit universities based on their interests, priorities and career aspirations.

Professor Quintin McKellar CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire, said:  "We are thrilled with the results of our QS Stars evaluation that we feel truly reflect the hard work and dedication of our staff and students in achieving excellence across multiple areas, alongside our ongoing commitment to providing a world-class educational experience and addressing the global challenges of today.

“While there are many outstanding scores to celebrate, as an institute that prides itself on being a modern, dynamic and enterprising university, it was particularly validating to achieve a score of 99 out of 100 for our state-of-the-art facilities. It reflects our dedication to creating an environment for academic excellent, innovation and a vibrant community where students can thrive.”

QS Stars differ from the well-known QS World University Rankings. While both can complement each other, QS Stars offers a more comprehensive evaluation by focusing on an institution's internal performance, rather than its standing relative to other universities. This means that the rating reflects the quality of the university’s offerings, with no comparative focus on peer institutions.

The results of the evaluation are valid for three to five years, offering institutions an opportunity to highlight their continuous progress.

Professor McKellar added:  “The University of Hertfordshire’s engagement with the QS evaluation process further reinforces its commitment to setting the standard for what a modern university should be; an anchor institution driving greater opportunities and outcomes for all through our education, research and enterprise activity.”

The University of Hertfordshire’s ambitions for the next five years include Herts becoming a top 50 university in a UK league tables and for research excellence in the 2029 Research Excellence Framework; being in the top 50% for graduate outcomes; in the top 25% for Knowledge Exchange (KEF) and student satisfaction; and continuing developments to be net zero by 2050.
