Creating an inclusive, aspirational culture
Friendly, ambitious, collegiate, enterprising and student-focussed—these are the core values that make us who we are. Our students and staff are the embodiment of these values, sitting at the heart of our strategic plan and guiding everything we do.
We proudly encourage a diverse and wholly inclusive culture of respect, integrity and belonging that ensures our students and staff know they are heard and valued. We invite our people to engage wherever and whenever they can, knowing that these shared experiences and divergent voices bring additional richness to our community, deeply enhancing our understanding of the world in which we operate. From Wellbeing Champions to Student Advocates and Ambassadors, we are committed to enabling every member of our community to have a say and to fulfil their potential.
Encouraging staff progress
As one of the region's largest employers, we celebrate our 3,000 members of staff, supporting their health and wellbeing and offering a multitude of career development opportunities. We want all our colleagues to feel confident that they’ll make a difference in the world, whichever path they choose to explore.
We are committed to ensuring that our researchers experience the best possible working conditions. Our strong connections with industry and the professions accelerate knowledge sharing and provide our researchers with direct access to the partnerships they need to maximise the impact of their work—here in Hertfordshire, and around the world.
Supporting career preparedness
Herts students enjoy learning from teachers with lived experience, within modern, real-world facilities that enhance and accelerate their career preparedness. And our facilities truly shine—from a full-scale courtroom with public gallery in our Grace Ononiwu Law Court Building, to our Institute of Sport, with the first teaching and learning facilities of their kind in the southeast.
Our Enterprise Hub supports a huge range of student small business start-ups and connectivity with local industry, creating still further opportunities. Next to come is our exciting new School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science (SPECS) Building, due to open in 2024. This fantastic new centre and all its world class facilities will take STEM education in the region to new heights – five floors to be precise!
Our international partnerships also benefit our students by providing ample opportunities to study abroad or take up work experience with major multinationals. We’re truly powering potential with pride—and celebrate decades of graduates who’ve landed exciting careers from sport to science, medicine to marketing.
Supporting our international community
As a globally connected University, we believe that the inclusion of different voices and unique perspectives is what makes our community thrive and enhances our research, teaching and educational experience. We also know it’s important that we provide meaningful support to our staff and students, and the wider academic community, when events take place in the wider world that affect them.
