The Financial Assistance Fund - the impact

The University Student Trust Fund (USTF) contributes to the University’s Financial Assistance Fund and this academic year (2023-24) it has provided financial aid to over 300 students.

A recent Hertfordshire Students Union survey revealed 45% of students cannot afford rent comfortably each month, meaning many more students are having to work up to 20 hours a week on top of their studies. 13% said they had more than one job. Increases in the basic costs of living are particularly impacting those students who are dependent on a maintenance loan to live.

Your donation to the USTF really helps those students who are in most need to weather the impact of rising costs. Recipients tell us that the funds distributed via the Student Hardship Fund keep them studying, as they alleviate financial worries that can lead to them to withdraw from university. Gifts to this fund are powerful and meaningful, directly contributing to success.

The grant made a huge difference in my life, it helped me to pay a few of my expenses. I used the money to pay off half of my rent that was pending.

It’s the best feeling to know that this kind of support is available for students! Without it, I could have left my studies or ended up in a difficult financial situation.

I was overwhelmed and so happy to receive support from the university. It was a relief; it felt like all the heavy weight on my shoulders was removed, and I could focus back on my work.

I just wanted to say thank you so, so much. Honestly in several months of consistent rubbish news I feel so overwhelmed to have been provided this support, you truly don’t know how much this will help me. I am so grateful.
