Reigniting his passion for music

Bradley had spent years writing music and saw coming to Herts as an opportunity to challenge himself beyond songwriting. For him, the BSc (Hons) Music Composition and Technology for Films and Games course covered so many interesting topics that he had to apply. ‘We were able to compose music for adverts, short films, and video games. We were also taught recording techniques to make our own sounds, and we learnt how to mix and master music following industry standards. I left Herts with a deep understanding of the sector and how to create sound.’

Favourite memories and skills gained

Some of Bradley’s favourite memories from Herts were time spent with friends, whom he is still in touch with today. Bradley says, ‘Life is busy, but we still find time to catch up over the phone and meet up every so often.’

Bradley says his time at Herts has made him a more confident speaker, particularly in front of large groups. He says, ‘We had to give presentations to our class nearly every semester, which I found extremely difficult. It is still challenging for me, but being able to practice at Herts has made it much less intimidating.’

Career and ambitions

Since graduating with a first-class degree, Bradley has become a Learning Support Assistant at a secondary school. He was a mature student at Herts and spent a lot of time mentoring his younger peers on his course. Bradley says, ‘This experience helped me prepare for my current role. I work closely with the school’s special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) service to guide the children towards becoming successful and confident individuals.’

Bradley would love to work with audio in the video game industry, whether that’s creating sound assets, sound editing, or implementing sound assets into games. However, he remains passionate about supporting SEND students and is seeking a diagnosis of autism himself. Bradley adds, ‘I want to advocate and fight for the children I work with, so they have the same opportunities as others.’

His advice

Bradley’s advice is to ‘manage your time effectively. At the start of each semester, I would write down the due dates of all my assignments on a whiteboard. This helped me chip away at each assignment little by little, and I could hand in assignments two to four weeks ahead of schedule. However, it’s easy to let time slip away if you’re not careful, and you might find yourself in a situation where hours are left before a deadline.’
