A passion for music

Nick says that making the decision to study BSc (Hons) Audio Recording and Production at Herts was easy. ‘I went to an open day and met a few of my future lecturers. They told me about the course, and I knew then that Herts was the right place to pursue my passion for music.’ Nick had considered studying at other universities but was drawn to Herts’ campus, state-of-the-art facilities, and experienced creative arts lecturers.

Gaining experience at The Forum

Whilst at Herts, Nick worked as a Sound and Lighting Engineer at The Forum, the home of Hertfordshire Students’ Union. He also worked as a Senior Student Engineer at the on-campus music studios, providing out-of-hours tech support and giving tours to people who wanted to see the University’s facilities.

Nick says, ‘I made many friends and connections at Herts, some of whom I am still in contact with.’

Working for Netflix, BBC, and ITV

Nick works as a Sound Assistant and Trainee Sound Supervisor for Tall Audio. Nick says, ‘I have been fortunate to have worked on jobs for some of the biggest companies in TV, including TNT Sport, Eurosport, Netflix, BBC, ITV, and ITV Sport. I’ve worked on different projects worldwide, including at the Superbowl, on Netflix’s Tour de France documentary, and at over 60 MotoGP events.’

Nick adds, ‘The course and extra-curricular work I did at Herts has helped me immensely. I studied a non-broadcasting degree, but I have been able to transfer many skills into different audio disciplines. I can’t thank Herts and the lecturers enough.’

Nick is looking forward to a career as a Sound Supervisor and hopes to jump into self-employment as a freelancer in the next few years.

Nick’s advice

Nick recommends the University's audio recording and production courses to those looking to follow his career path. He adds, ‘Herts has had a massive impact on my life. It’s a fabulous place to learn, grow and make friends.

‘To current Herts students, your hard work and dedication will pay off. Graduation feels so much sweeter when you’ve given everything for that final grade.’
