Becoming an Expert in Renewable Energy
Sheraz is a highly skilled renewable energy engineer with a focus on hydroelectric power projects. Over the past 15 years, he has led numerous projects in his home country of Pakistan, guiding them from the planning stages through to completion. One of his notable achievements is the 102MW Gulpur Hydropower Plant, which was designed to lower the cost of electricity in Pakistan and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sheraz also played a key role in the ground-breaking New Bong Escape Hydropower project, Pakistan’s first privately funded hydroelectric power plant, which generates electricity for both residential and industrial use.
Sheraz's journey into the field of renewable energy began at Herts, where he was impressed by the University's cutting-edge facilities. Reflecting on a visit from his father, Sheraz recalls, ‘My dad, an experienced civil engineer, was amazed by what he saw here. Herts had state-of-the-art engineering labs and equipment that he had never encountered back home.’
Sheraz’s favourite place at Herts was the LRC (Learning Resource Centre). ‘I spent many late nights there studying’.
For his final year project, Sheraz programmed a microprocessor to make a digital compass. He says his tutors provided him with fantastic support and he gained a lot of confidence that he has carried with him throughout his career.
Leading projects with a global impact
Sheraz is driven by his passion for green energy projects and aspires to continue making a significant impact as an international renewable energy expert. He is also a proud member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for the betterment of humanity.
To students, Sheraz offers this advice: ‘Choose a course that excites and fascinates you. Be patient with your studies, and don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ve got this!’
