‘My journey to becoming a CEA has been most memorable’
By Helen Obiageli Oshikoya
Initially when I started the programme, I was afraid that I may have jumped into an area that may not be so useful to my professional development, in the sense that the professional status of a Chartered Educational Assessor is not well known in Nigeria. However, on reviewing the benefits, I decided that I would take the bold step and embark on this training. So I jumped on a plane and flew to the UK.
The first part of the training was conducted at the University of Hertfordshire. The facilitators were extremely professional in the way they delivered the course. Even though I was new to the area of assessment processes, I was eased into all the concepts well and I was extremely pleased with the learning experience.
The online training part of the programme was also a wonderful experience as I was able to have constant contact with my facilitators even though I was no longer in the United Kingdom. At this point I knew that I had made the right choice.
The portfolio research was very tasking as I had quite a bit of difficulty getting data for my research. Eventually, I was able to come up with enough data to make my case study. Having the status of a Chartered Educational Assessor has enabled me to have the confidence needed to approach various educational institutes in Nigeria. Presently I am working with the Corona College of Education and The Corona Trust Council and we are in the process of developing better policies for their children with Additional Educational Needs, an area that I based my Portfolio on. Several other educational consultancies have also approached me about doing some work for them.
I am so pleased that I made this bold decision and I highly recommend this course for those that want to make a change in the area of assessment processes. I look forward to representing the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
