Stuart Shaw appointed new Chair of Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors
CIEA is pleased to announce that Stuart Shaw has been appointed as the new Chair.
Stuart has worked for international awarding bodies for over 20 years. From 2007 to 2021, he was Head of Research at Cambridge Assessment International Education. Stuart is particularly interested in demonstrating how educational and psychological tests seek to meet the demands of validity, reliability and fairness. Stuart is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA) and a Fellow of the Association for Educational Assessment in Europe (AEA-Europe). He is also an Honorary Professor of University College London in the Institute of Education - Curriculum, Pedagogy & Assessment, a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA), Chair of the IAEA Communications Committee, and an elected member of the Council of AEA-Europe and Chair of its Scientific Programme Committee.
Commenting on his appointment, Stuart Shaw said:
"I am delighted to be joining the CIEA at an exciting time for assessment as technology changes have the potential to transform the educational landscape. I will provide strategic direction and oversight to the organisation as we look to embrace the future of assessment, ensuring that the CIEA is central to cross-sector developments. I want to position the CIEA as an independent, credible and respected organisation that supports assessment professionals dealing with the changing demands of the roles. I will offer guidance and support to ensure the organisation achieves its potential of being the leading professional membership body for the educational assessment community"
The University of Hertfordshire works in partnership with the CIEA, providing a home on its campus in Hatfield. Penny Carey, Dean of the Schools of Law and Education at the University, commented,
“At the University of Hertfordshire we are very proud of our partnership with the CIEA and we warmly welcome the appointment of a new CIEA Chair. In partnership with CIEA we offer a wide range of programmes to help improve the quality of assessment, something we value highly at Herts”.
The CIEA was set up to improve standards in educational assessment. We are a professional membership organisation. Our members include teachers, examiners, school and college leaders, academics, awarding organisations and people responsible for professional development in diverse sectors including finance, health, and land management.
The CIEA's partnership with the University of Hertfordshire facilitates the delivery of our programme of activities; we now have a comprehensive range of training, designed to meet the needs of assessment professionals working across the full range of settings and age-ranges. Through our membership services, we provide recognition for assessment professionals and are seeking to develop a community of practitioners committed to ensuring high-quality educational assessment practice wherever that takes place. We are also committed to providing opportunities for members to hear about, and contribute to, contemporary debates on current issues affecting assessment practice.
