This holistic programme includes a part-time level 7 Apprenticeship in Senior Leadership and a Masters (MSc) qualification in Healthcare Leadership from the University of Hertfordshire, with an NHS Leadership Academy award in Senior Healthcare Leadership (the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Award). It is aimed at those with senior management responsibilities within health and social care settings, both clinical and non-clinical, who are looking to develop clear, inclusive, and strategic leadership capability relating to their area of responsibility within their organisation.
The course focuses on three key areas:
- Leadership that promotes equality, diversity and inclusion
- Leadership focused on the quality of care provided to patients, service users and carers
- Leading sustainable improvement of services and processes.
Within the level 7 apprenticeship (and PG Diploma Healthcare), learners will navigate through six interconnected modules, supported by a team of expert tutors offering regular reviews, development and coaching. Each module focuses on one of the core themes of leading self, leading teams and leading organisations and systems. The final top up modules of the programme involves writing a healthcare leadership case study (dissertation) leading to a Masters (MSc) healthcare leadership.
Learners will also benefit from work-based mentorship, peer-peer support through action learning sets, on-campus workshops and self-paced online courses. A unique collaboration between The University of Hertfordshire’s Business School and School of Healthcare and Social Work allows you to open up networks that provide real-world input into learning, which is valuable towards future job opportunities.

What will I study?
You will study a range of modules which incorporate theoretical knowledge and understanding with the practical application of skills and behaviours in the apprentice’s workplace. This includes:
- Understand how you, as a leader, can make a difference to improving care quality and patient experience
- Enabling others to give their best to improve care quality and patient experience
- Embedding behaviours that improve care quality and patient experience
- Making patient-centred co-ordinated care happen
- Making decisions based upon the best available evidence to improve care quality and patient experience

The programme consists of six compulsory modules leading to the PG Diploma Healthcare Leadership and the Level seven senior leader degree apprenticeship followed by a zero-credit apprenticeship module and then two dissertation modules leading to the MSc Healthcare Leadership. All modules are delivered online and are supported with an online group tutorial in the first week.
These modules are accompanied by seven compulsory on-campus experiential workshops (16 days in total) which take place across the duration of the programme, and 10 compulsory full days (six on campus and four online) of working in small action learning sets to apply learning to the workplace.
