Course and module structure

This programme is for those wishing to study project management at postgraduate (Master's) level. You will gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required for a successful career in project management.

This course pulls together project management theory, practice and solid hands-on experience to provide you with an excellent grounding in project management theory and methods.

The balance of theory and practice is reflected in the research interests and practitioner experience of our specialist lecturers.

The course content covers qualitative and quantitative aspects of project management including:

What will I study?

We offer a varied programme of teaching that includes facilitated seminars, practical workshops, web-based learning, case study analysis and traditional lectures. We also provide sessions by visiting staff, practitioners and consultants to give a varied perspective of the topics covered.

You will be assessed through a variety of coursework including presentations, reports and projects. You will also be required to complete a dissertation and will be supported by a dissertation supervisor.

This module covers the principles of data storytelling, including audience analysis, data visualisation, and narrative construction. Students will learn to analyse complex datasets, create impactful visualisations, and craft compelling narratives to communicate insights. The module emphasises practical application and prepares students to present data-driven stories that drive informed decision-making.
Project Management for Business	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module covers advanced project management concepts, focusing on risk, scheduling, budget management, quality management and associated subject areas in hybrid project lifecycles. You will learn about project management roles, governance, and the importance of comprehensive project management plans. The module includes a critical assessment of stakeholder requirements, evaluation of project delivery options, and application of effective scheduling and resource allocation techniques. You will develop skills in analysing and adapting business cases to align with organisational goals, ensuring successful project outcomes with effective use of relevant technology.
Project Leadership and Communications Management	15 Credits	Compulsory
The importance of leadership and communications are increasingly acknowledged as project managers deliver outcomes with both direct and indirect forms of authority, control and influence. Students will explore the influence of people in project environments along with the need for building and leading effective teams and maintaining relationships between key roles in the project environment. Students will investigate underlying theories of leadership, compassion, motivation, power and influence, culture, competencies, communication, and conflict, as applicable to projects, and explore strategies for effectively managing people during implementation.
Managing Time, Cost and Risk	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module explores managing risks, time, and costs in hybrid project lifecycles, integrating iterative and linear approaches. You will gain skills in advanced risk management, including identification, assessment, and mitigation. The course covers creating and managing optimised project schedules and advanced budgeting techniques. You will also learn how to monitor and control project performance throughout a project lifecycle. Emphasis is on how effective schedule and budget management serve as crucial risk management strategies to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget, achieving success.
Change and Transformation Management	15 Credits	Compulsory
Projects are vehicles for improving business performance and sound initiation is the basis for effective project implementation, especially when addressing wicked problems or complex situations. How a project is framed and perceived by different stakeholders influences its implementation and outcomes. This module uses systems approaches to help students think through complex and 'messy' situations, understand one another's perspective, focus on the desired ends, and identify appropriate changes to manage the boundaries and interdependencies and understand the impact on people and related processes during project implementation.
Sustainability in Projects	15 Credits	Optional
This module equips students with the skills to critically assess how sustainability influences organizational strategy, resource allocation, and project planning. It examines the integration of environmental, social, and economic factors into decision-making processes, fostering a comprehensive understanding of sustainable business cases. Students will explore creating sustainable benefits frameworks aligned with organizational goals and stakeholder expectations. Through practical case studies, the module emphasizes embedding sustainability in operations, risk management, and culture, preparing students to adapt business strategies to evolving market and environmental conditions.
Product Management	15 Credits	Optional
This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the product lifecycle within a project management framework. Students will explore key elements such as product development, market validation, and strategic alignment with business goals. The course emphasizes hands-on skills in roadmap creation, cross-functional collaboration, and stakeholder engagement. By the end of the module, students will be equipped to manage the complexities of product management, ensuring product success while navigating changing market dynamics and project constraints.
Applied Client Research Project	60 Credits	Compulsory
This module aims to equip students with the skills to independently conduct research projects, while developing research, analytical, and practical skills for effective project planning and management. Students will explore applied research methodologies, analyse project factors with tools like PESTLE/SWOT/VUCA and develop communication plans. You will gain insights into stakeholder engagement, scope, risk management, quality assurance and investment appraisal techniques like IRR NPV. The module covers transition planning, change control and significance of diversity, inclusivity and sustainability for project success, thereby enhancing employability.
Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence	15 Credits	Optional
This module covers the principles and concepts of Digital Transformation (DT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), including relevant toolset usage (including automation and AI, cybersecurity etc.) to ensure and enable effective decision-making throughout the project management lifecycle and associated areas, such as linking with organisational aspects. The module emphasizes practical usage and application that prepare students to enable effective project delivery, dealing with differing aspects such as driving informed decision-making in real-world scenarios and working with diverse audiences/stakeholders.
