Masters by Research Human Geography
About the course
A University of Hertfordshire research degree is an internationally recognised degree signifying high levels of achievement in research. It develops extensive subject expertise and independent research skills which are honed over an extended period, depending on the level of the award.
The topic of research will depend upon your specific interests and the expertise of available academic staff. Current topics include:
- geopolitics of the anthropocene
- borders and shatterzones
- small island geopolitics
- diplomatic geographies
- migration
- transport and transport planning
- urbanism and urban planning
- rural planning
- traditional irrigation
- children’s geographies
- geographies of diversity and inequalities
You will undertake an original research project for the duration of the degree, under the supervision and guidance of two or more academic members of staff. You are also supported by attendance at the University's generic training courses and our seminar series. For the duration of the degree, you are given opportunities to present your work at major conferences, subject to available funding for which applications for financial support would be required.
The degree is assessed on the final research output, in the form of a written thesis of up to 25,000 words, which is defended in a viva voce examination with an external examiner present.
How to apply
Before making your formal application, we recommend that you discuss your proposed research with the appropriate member of staff in the Geography, Environment and Planning subject group and the Research Tutor, Professor John Sturzaker.
Please include an outline research proposal with your application. Members of academic staff will advise on the length and scope of the proposal.
Applications should be returned to DoctoralCollegeAdmissions@herts.ac.uk.
Teaching methods
Research degrees are not taught programmes, but you are supported with a range of skills-based training.
You will meet with your supervisory team regularly to discuss your research and receive feedback on your writing and research. You are given the opportunity to attend the University's generic skills training sessions and attend staff and student seminars and other research events within the Geography, Environment and Planning subject group.
Our emphasis is on the development of the individual student's research programme and research skills: you can expect high quality tuition and a highly supportive and friendly atmosphere in which to conduct your studies.
