Hertfordshire Medical School is opening in 2026 to meet the growing demand for medical professionals in the region and across the UK. With cutting-edge facilities and a truly global community, you will receive training designed to set you apart in the medical field. From year one, you'll engage in hands-on clinical placements, gaining real-world experience as you learn to make an impact.
In September 2026, Hertfordshire Medical School will welcome its first cohort onto a new five-year undergraduate Medicine degree, leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) delivered with support from City St George’s, University of London.
Initially the MBBS degree will be available to international students only, with plans to open to UK fee-paying students soon after. With a longstanding reputation in medical sciences, ranked in the top 10% nationally (National Student Survey, 2024), Herts is well-positioned to address the growing demand in this field.
The MBBS degree at Herts will be taught through a combination of lectures, small group sessions, and clinical teaching. The course features a hybrid of case-based and problem-based learning, along with comprehensive clinical skills and simulation training. You'll have the chance to intercalate during your studies, earning an additional qualification. A key highlight of the course is the opportunity to engage with patients and participate in clinical placements as early as your first year.

Clinical placements
Contact with patients and clinical placements begins in your first year. Clinical placements will take place locally and across the east of England, offering you exposure to a wide and diverse patient population. This hands-on experience is essential in developing the skills needed to become a resilient and compassionate doctor. You’ll actively participate in patient care applying your clinical knowledge in real-world situations. Placement sites are within commuting distance of the University, and through strong partnerships with the National Health Service (NHS), these local and regional placements increase your chances of securing employment in the area should you choose to remain in the UK after graduation.
Confirmed placement providers include several local, key, NHS partners, including East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Herts and West Essex Integrated Care Board (HWE ICB); and primary care partners with many local GP practices.
