Account Manager at Fathom
Meet Shivani. To compliment her learning, Shivani took part in many extracurricular activities whilst at Herts. She was a Student Representative, achieved a Go Herts Award, and hosted the first joint student society festival.
Shivani enjoyed studying economics for her A-levels, so the BA (Hons) Business Economics degree at Herts felt like the right step. The course structure also suited her preference for coursework-based assessments.
Shivani dived into the student experience whilst at Herts, joining the Student Union’s Hindu Society where she coordinated the first joint society festival for Holi and Purim. Shivani says, ‘The festival is one of my favourite memories and it was great to bring together different faiths for one big celebration.’ Shivani was also a Student Representative and had an important role in voicing feedback about the course from her peers to the School.
When she graduated, Shivani received the Go Herts Gold Award, given to students that have shown fantastic commitment to activities outside of their studies.
It has been a few years since Shivani left Herts, but she is still friends with many people she met on her course, playing netball, and in the Hindu Society.
Shivani says the skills and knowledge she gained on the BA (Hons) Business Economics course has opened many doors for her. She is now an Account Manager for software company Fathom and adds, ‘The software Fathom provides integrates with accounting programmes, so the accounting module I studied during my course has given me a solid foundation for the role.’
Shivani applied for and enrolled on summer internships during her degree to help prepare her for the business environment. Her advice is, ‘Many employers want to see graduates that are proactive and gain experience outside the classroom. Do your best to do that, as it will really help you when applying for jobs.
‘University is one of the most important experiences of your life. Work hard and most importantly get a good degree – this will set you up well for the future.’
“I really valued the wide range of optional modules to choose from on the course, which allowed me to explore different avenues in the first two years, and then cater the course to my specific interests and competencies in final year ” (C.Godding, 2021).
