Course overview
A medical career is the chance to harness science and make a real difference, often saving people’s lives. Perhaps you are drawn to the many practical and intellectual challenges that this well-respected and rewarding profession offers, where no day is ever the same.
Our degree in medicine offers a forward-thinking and dynamic curriculum to support your development and training as a medical professional. With a focus on compassionate patient care, practical clinical experience and academic excellence, this Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree is ideal if you’re eager to take a more hands-on approach to your learning. The use of technology, together with clinical placements from the very first year enhance your educational experience, giving you the opportunity to engage with real-world medical situations early on. This sought-after experience will give you a head start in your career, setting you up for success in a sector with growing demand for skilled and capable doctors.
Delivered with support from City St George’s, University of London, and with continuous input from healthcare professionals to ensure it meets the evolving demands of the healthcare sector, our MBBS degree will give you the solid foundation in medical knowledge and the clinical skills needed to thrive in your chosen field. We will develop your critical thinking, problem solving, resilience and communication skills, so that you are well prepared to deliver patient-centred care in a variety of environments.
At the end of the course, you will take the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA); all medical students graduating from UK universities have to pass this to join the medical register and practise as a doctor.
Why choose this course?

This real-world practical experience will set you apart as you progress in your training.
You will learn in spaces designed to mirror real-world healthcare settings. Plus, you can enjoy the cultural and professional benefits of London without the high cost of living in the capital.
Tailored learning opportunities ensure you can pursue areas of personal interest through selected components and electives, and with on-going career advice, you can steer your training and development in the direction that best suits your future medical career.
As a medical student, you are guaranteed accommodation on campus for the duration of your five-year degree, subject to meeting application deadlines and personal needs. All of our halls of residence are conveniently located on campus, so you'll always be within a 10-minute walk from our teaching, social and sports facilities.

Professional accreditations
We are working with the General Medicine Council (GMC) to gain accreditation for our MBBS degree. The GMC reviews all new UK medical schools every year, following the first cohort from their first year until graduation to ensure our MBBS degree meets the highest standards for medical education in the UK. At the end of this first cycle, the GMC can approve the Hertfordshire Medical School as a body that can award UK primary medical qualifications.
In the unlikely scenario of Herts not receiving GMC accreditation, students would be transferred to our contingency partner university, City St George’s to complete their studies. This ensures that students who pass all of their assessments receive a GMC-recognised medical qualification.
Graduates of our MBBS degree will be eligible to apply to the UK Foundation Programme.
Your future career
A degree in medicine offers a range of rewarding career options. Employment prospects are high: an impressive 98% of Herts health, nursing and social work graduates are in work or further study 15 months after graduating (Graduate Outcomes, 2021/22).
For most MBBS degree graduates, the next step is the UK Foundation Programme (FP). This two-year programme provides general medical training and bridges the gap between medical school and further specialty training, ensuring the development of clinical and professional skills. After the Foundation Programme, doctors working in the UK continue training in a chosen specialist area of medicine, with over 60 options available.
The most likely career route is to become a medical doctor (for example a GP, hospital physician or surgeon), but alternative pathways include:
- public health
- medical education
- research
- healthcare management
- health journalism
- medical technology.
At the end of your MBBS degree, you will take the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA). All students graduating from UK universities need to pass this to join the medical register and practise.
What you'll study
This forward-thinking and dynamic medical undergraduate degree spans five years, blending hands-on clinical practice with the latest innovations in medical technology. You will have an average of 20-25 contact hours per week, supplemented by independent study and clinical placement hours. The MBBS degree is taught through a combination of lectures, small group sessions and clinical teaching. Our curriculum is designed to support active learning, peer interaction and regular reflection, with co-curricular opportunities to enrich your understanding of patient care.
Years 1 to 2 focus on the core sciences, including anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, with case-based learning and early clinical placements. You will develop the skills to take a patient’s history, as well as physical examination and problem-solving skills.
In Years 3 to 5, you will develop your clinical skills further through more complex cases, with increased exposure through placements in hospitals and other healthcare settings. There are options to specialise in areas such as surgery, paediatrics and internal medicine, and you will take on greater responsibility in patient care, working closely with healthcare teams to develop advanced clinical practice skills.
Assessment methods include written exams, Clinical Competency Assessments (CCAs) and continuous assessments based on clinical placements and portfolios.
Students who have passed Years 1 to 3 of the MBBS degree have the chance to intercalate to earn an additional qualification between Years 4 and 5.
