Pathway to a Master's degree

Our PGCE programme also provides a valuable academic advantage, awarding 60 Master’s-level credits (equivalent to one-third of a Master’s degree). After completing your PGCE, you have the option to continue part-time toward a Master’s degree in Education.

What's the course about?

This Masters level professional training programme will introduce you to the requirements for teaching physical education to the 11-16 age range and leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. Where appropriate, you'll also have opportunities to experience then post 16 provision will be available.

You'll be introduced to the principles and theories of secondary teaching through both subject studies and a developing professional practice course. Training is undertaken in partnership with local secondary schools.

We are looking to select trainees who:

  • have the passion, commitment and enthusiasm to teach in secondary schools
  • are resilient and able to work under pressure
  • have good subject knowledge to train to teach in the area they are interested in.

What will I study?

A wide range of teaching and learning methods are used, including on-campus teaching and hands on experience in a school environment.

On-campus tutor led sessions will include lectures, seminars and workshops, where active participation is encouraged. You'll also spend twenty-four weeks of the programme in local partnerships schools. This gives you the opportunity to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of a team of practising teachers who lead key sessions as well as support you in your school-based training where you develop your classroom expertise.

The programme includes opportunities to visit different educational contexts, including a primary school and a special needs school.
