Research areas in optical networks
Our research extends from Optical architectures and the consolidation of Wireless networks for Next Generation PONs, to the development of MAC layer protocols and algorithms for XGPONs and converged Optical/Wireless topologies.
Recently research efforts have been directed towards System-on-Chip design on FPGAs and embedded systems for hardware-software code-design.
Currently we are partner and workpackage leader of the ACCORDANCE STREP project funded by the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013).
ACCORDANCE investigates a new paradigm for the access network: The introduction of OFDMA into a Passive Optical Network (PON) architecture offering at the same time optical backhauling for wireless and copper-based networks.
The use of OFDMA in ACCORDANCE is intended to introduce a novel high-capacity extended-reach optical access network offering improved performance compared to evolving TDMA-PONs.
