Project outline

The Centre for Astrophysics Research has a strong research programme, across a broad spectrum of theoretical and observational topics and is offering several projects in the following areas:

  • Galaxies, Active Galactic Nuclei and Cosmology
  • Solar, Stellar and Time-domain Physics
  • Extra-solar planets and brown dwarfs

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold, or expect to have been awarded by the starting date, at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. physics, astrophysics, mathematics, computer science). In practice we would normally expect applicants to hold an undergraduate Masters degree (MPhys/MSci) or a masters-level postgraduate qualification, or to be able to demonstrate significant relevant professional experience gained outside academia.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for STFC studentships, which are now open to UK residents and international applicants alike.

  • Two academic references. References must be sent direct from the referee to the Doctoral College
  • Copies of qualification certificates and transcripts
  • Certification of English language competence (minimum IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) for candidates for whom English is not their first language.

Funding information

  • The studentships include fees, plus a tax-free stipend expected to be around £19,237 per year (exact figure TBC pending an annual review by UKRI), paid in monthly instalments.
