Scholarships, grants and bursaries
At Herts, we want to empower you to realise your potential. That's why we're committed to providing extensive financial support through a range of non-repayable scholarships, grants, bursaries and prizes.
- Scholarships are usually a sum of money granted to a student to support their studies, often because of prior merit (e.g. academic; sporting; musical achievement)
- Bursaries are usually a financial award granted to a student on the basis of financial need, or on the basis of belonging to a disadvantaged or under-represented group as recognised in the University’s Access and Participation Plan (please note that ‘scholarship’ and ‘bursary’ are often interchangeable terms, and some bursaries are competitive).
- Grants can be similar to bursaries. They are usually a form of financial aid awarded based on meeting specific criteria.
- Prizes are usually financial rewards based on academic performance or achievement determined by exam boards or a panel of academics.
Usually, how these financial awards are spent is at the discretion of the selected students: this means you can spend the money on fees, textbooks, housing or other living expenses as you choose.

Athletes from other team and/or individual sports will be considered on a case-by-case basis but should be representing their sport at a national age group level or above (or an equivalent level where player pathways may differ from sport to sport).
There are a range of benefits available for student-athletes who may receive some or all the following support services:
- gym membership at The Sport Village and The Oval campus gyms
- strength and conditioning from industry leading coaches at Performance Herts
- athlete education workshops covering topics such as nutrition, sport psychology, anti-doping, etc.
