Applications for student finance are made through Student Finance England (SFE) or the relevant awarding body. Whether you're applying for an undergraduate, postgraduate or postgraduate doctoral student loan you’ll need to visit the Government website to apply.
You’ll either be asked to set up a student finance account or log into one (if you have an account with student finance already). Your online account is where you can view your statements and letters, track your application and lots more.
Please note that international students are not eligible for funding from the Student Loans Company.

FAQ'S
What documents will I need?
To apply you’ll need your National Insurance number and in-date passport details (if applicable), as well as your bank account details. Depending on your circumstances Student Finance England may ask for other documents (e.g. a birth, marriage or divorce certificate or residency documents) please send these as soon as you can.
What information is needed?
It’s important that you complete the application form in full. Make sure you include details of any previous study you’ve undertaken at Higher Education level in any country. Incomplete information could result in your funding being withdrawn.
When should I apply?
We strongly recommend that you apply as soon as you can. For undergraduate students, applications normally open in the February before the next academic year. For postgraduate students, you can apply the summer before the start of your course.
You do not need to wait for an offer before you apply, or to have decided on where you want to study. You can still apply with your preferred choice and change it later. Just remember to make any changes by 1 September. Applying early will help your loan to be in place for the start of term. If you apply late, you may not receive all the funding you’re entitled to in time for your first term.
Can I change my application?
If you have already applied for student finance and need to change your application, you may be able to do so online by logging into your student finance account. What you can change will depend on what stage your application is at.
How can I keep myself safe from fraud?
Be careful with your personal details online. Students are often targeted with phishing emails around student finance payment dates. It is important to know that:
the Student Loans Company (SLC) will never ask you to update your bank details by email
SLC will never ask you to verify your student account details by email
you should ignore SLC branded messages that tell you to 'validate your account' or provide any personal, security or banking details.
Please email funding@herts.ac.uk if you have any queries. For example, if you can’t find your course on the application form or if there are any changes to your course. If you're intending to study an undergraduate degree we may ask for your UCAS ID, so please have it to hand.
