Health, Medicine and Life Sciences

This is an exciting time for the University as we launch our new School of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences. With a longstanding reputation in medical sciences, ranked in the top 10% nationally in the National Student Survey 2024, and ranked 1st in the East of England for medical technology and bioengineering in biological sciences (Complete University Guide, 2025), Herts is ideally placed to meet the growing demand for medical and healthcare professionals in the region and across the UK.

Specialising in courses designed to help you make a meaningful impact on the world, no matter where your passion lies, you can be confident that the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences offers the facilities to support your success.

As a student, you can look forward to research-based course content, opportunities to practice your skills in outstanding facilities, all within a supportive and inclusive environment. Our newly established school is organised into three areas, each specialising in life sciences, clinical, and health-related subjects across diverse disciplines that encourage lifelong learning.

Health and Social Work

As a UK centre of excellence, Herts is recognised as the largest provider of radiography education and the first in the country to offer paramedic degrees. Our new multi-million-pound Health building, set to open in 2028, will provide the next generation of nurses, midwives, radiographers, paramedics, and dietitians with an exceptional and unparalleled learning experience. You’ll be taught by our dedicated academic staff, whose guidance will help open the door to a rewarding career.

Medicine

Aligned with the University’s acclaimed healthcare and research strengths, the new Hertfordshire Medical School, opening in September 2026, will offer you a dedicated space to study medicine.  The medical school will deliver a new five-year undergraduate medicine degree, leading to the award of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Some of the programme will also be taught in the University’s brand new Health building to ensure you benefit from an integrated student experience.

Life and Medical Sciences

Our life and medical sciences courses offer the opportunity to explore a diverse array of subjects, including biological and environmental science, psychology, and optometry. Students have access to our modern Science building, offering naturally lit laboratories and collaborative spaces, providing you with an inspiring environment that promotes multi-disciplinary learning and research, along with state-of-the-art sports facilities that include a sports injury clinic and performance testing centre.

I’m excited to be joining the University of Hertfordshire to lead the new School, and I’m really looking forward to working with staff to build on existing successes in health, allied health, medical and life sciences education and research. Our School is well placed to play a critical role in addressing NHS needs for clinical workforce both nationally and locally, to deliver world-class and impactful research, and to provide fantastic opportunities for our students.
