Physics research
Physics staff within the School of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics research a wide range of areas from classical optics to superfluids. Global warming is one of the outstanding contemporary scientific issues. Work here ranges from to designing and building our own detectors which are in turn used in global networks, to theoretical modelling including production of Europe-wide pollution forecasts. We examine the resolution limits allowed by nature (Heisenberg Uncertainty) with the aim of increasing our understanding of the fundamental limits of nature and into the rapidly expanding field of quantum computing through our studies on the behaviour of ultra-cold gases (Bose-Einstein condensates) and quantum information theory.
