Canvas Quizzes

Classic Quizzes is the system that many lecturers will be used to using and is still the version that we recommend for summative assessments with and without ProctorU.

Formative quizzes are a useful way to provide students with ongoing feedback on their learning progress. They enable students to self-regulate their learning, such as by identifying gaps in their knowledge and understanding. Formative quizzes also help promote engagement with a module’s content, rather than assessing them in a ‘pass/fail’ manner, and they can be embedded at various points during a module.

Canvas Quizzes can also be used for summative assessment, however several steps should be taken to help ensure quiz security and reduce plagiarism. First, however, when setting a summative quiz, students should have the opportunity to practice a similar exercise in the form of a formative practice test.

Over the last few years, Canvas has been developing New Quizzes. Currently, at UH, most quizzes are created using Classic Quizzes. New Quizzes is available but must be enabled on a module by a member of the teaching staff. New Quizzes should only be used for formative assessments.

New Quizzes has much of the same functionality, a cleaner interface, and some useful new question types. However, there are currently issues with the new question types not passing partial marking so the new question types should only be used for summative assessments if this behaviour is considered. For example, the question types can be used, but unless the perfect answer is the only acceptable answer, quizzes will need to be manually checked and scored.

Students should also take a series of useful steps before taking a summative quiz. This includes making full use of the practice test, reviewing their device setup, and knowing what to do if something goes wrong.

Software Licences

The University site licence means that Canvas Quizzes are available to all academic staff as ‘creators’ and students as ‘participants’.

Integrations

Quizzes are part of Canvas. This means that they are part of the entire assessment and grading workflow, including the use of SpeedGrader (although with slightly less functionality than the standard tool).

Accessibility

Canvas is independently certified to be ‘substantially conformant with Level A and Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1.,’ for more information please see Canvas’s accessibility page. Please remember that UH-authored content is not covered by this and must be made accessible to all students manually. For example, images in questions will need to have appropriate ALT text added to make them accessible before being released to students. Please note, the New Quizzes Hotspot activity relies on users identifying part of an image, and by its nature, this cannot be made accessible to users with limited sight.
